Bereaved parents of stillborn baby attend Warrington Lights of Love service

Stillbirth

A candle service referred to as Lights of Love took place in Warrington on December 4 to remember lost babies and loved ones.

I found out about this ceremony from Sands, a stillbirth and neonatal death charity, and developed the story by interviewing a grieving couple from Manchester who attended the event after they lost their baby over six weeks ago. I also made the story more newsworthy by researching into stillbirths, discovering that the UK had one of the highest rates in Europe in 2013.

Like all journalists, I questioned this and interviewed a local obstetrician and gynaecologist who suggested why this was the case. As a result, I produced a strong and emotive news story, targeting parents who have lost a baby/babies and people who have lost baby/babies within their family.
